On Hattie's phone, Constance Lowry came down the forty-one steps in handcuffs.
She wore her charcoal coat and her pearls, and she held her chin the way she held it at Foundation lunches.
The old butler stood at the open door with her gloves on a silver tray.
"Mrs. Lowry!" a reporter shouted. "Did you tell the caterer's boss to wipe the phones?"
Constance did not turn her head.
At the bottom step a detective in a brown coat took her elbow.
"Watch the last one, ma'am," he said. "It's uneven."
Hattie played it four times, and each time she squeaked at that line.
In March the courtroom smelled of floor wax and wet wool.
Camille Dunn sat at the defense table in a navy suit.
Constance had made bail and sat in the front row of the gallery, in black, alone.
Warner sat three seats from her with an empty seat between them.
Neither of them looked at the other.
