Chapter 14: Tea With the Wolf

Lu Chen reached the house at three in the morning, without a coat.

The taxi driver had asked twice if he was all right.

The kitchen was the only room with a light on.

Through the window he saw the two of them at the long wooden table.

Su Lu sat with a teapot and two cups in front of her, in her cream dressing gown, with her hair brushed smooth.

Su Ye sat across from her with a dish towel wrapped around his left wrist.

Lu Chen came in through the back door.

"Oh," Su Lu said warmly. "Look who ran all the way."

Su Ye did not turn his head.

"I didn't ask you to come," he said.

His voice was flat and cold, and Lu Chen had never heard it before.

"Su Lu texted me."

"Of course she did." Su Ye gave a short, ugly laugh. "She's very kind. She's been telling me for an hour how kind you are."

"Su Ye..."

"Sit down, Chen," Su Lu said. "You look terrible. Have some tea."

He did not sit.

The pot smelled of jasmine.

Under the jasmine, faint and sharp, there was a second smell, the sharp spirit smell of the blue bottle.

Lu Chen's stomach turned over.

Su Ye picked up his cup and held it under his nose.

"It's my fault, really," Su Lu said. She laid a hand on Su Ye's sleeve. "I should have warned you. He's a lovely boy, Chen, but he's secretive. He has been in my study. He's been whispering with that auditor. He lied about the jade, and he lied about the stairs."

"I know," Su Ye said.

"You know?"

"He's told me a lot of things tonight." Su Ye looked at the tea. "Some of them I'd rather not have heard."

Su Lu's eyes shone.

She was enjoying this, and she was careful not to show it.

"Poor Su Ye," she said. "Grandfather's in a bed, your mother's a wreck, and the man you trusted has been playing you. You shouldn't have to make decisions in this state."

"No."

"Let me help. Your parents will be useless for days." She slid a blue folder across the table. "It's a care authority. A few pages. It lets the two of us decide about Grandfather's treatment, so the hospital doesn't wait on a stranger's signature."
