Chapter 11: The Yellow Slicker
On Friday he drove me to my mother's bedside himself.
I had not asked him to.
He was in the kitchen at six with his keys in his hand, and he said, "Beverly should hear from you that I'm coming," and I understood that he meant to walk into the white house on Shell Belt Road as a guest.
My father's truck was in the yard.
Wendell Guidry met us at the front door with his captain's cap in his hands.
He had put on a clean shirt and combed his mustache, and he looked like a man arriving at his own funeral.
"Mr. Reese," he said.
"Mr. Guidry."
"I'd like to say something first."
"Say it to your wife," Cal said. "I came for her."
My father's eyes went to me.
They were wet and red-rimmed, and they pleaded.
I looked at him and I felt nothing, and the nothing was new.
"Daddy," I said. "Get out of the doorway."
He moved.
My mother lay in the front bedroom with the quilt smoothed and her hair brushed, and she had put on her good bed jacket.
The window was open to the bayou, and the air smelled of salt and cut grass.
"Mr. Reese," she said. "You'll forgive me for not standing."
"Mrs. Guidry." Cal crossed the room and stopped a respectful distance from the bed. "I'm sorry to meet you like this."
"I'm sorry too. Sit down, son."
He sat on the cane chair by the window.
He was too big for it.
My father hovered in the door, and my mother said, without looking at him, "Wendell, go and see to the dock," and he went.
I heard his boots on the porch.
I heard the truck start.
"Now," my mother said. "I'd like a minute with you."
"Mama," I said.
"Not with you, baby. With him."
I went and stood by the window.
I looked out at the water, and I heard everything.
"My daughter tells me she's keeping your books," Beverly said.
