Chapter 12: The Page
We rode the shore road at a pace the old woman should never have kept, and I held her round the waist the whole way.
She told it to me in pieces, over the wind.
She told me nothing I could not have guessed, and every word of it was a blow.
When we came to the Hall the iron box stood on the dining table, with its lid up.
Magnus Isbister stood beside it with his cap in his hands.
Torvald sat at the head, in his chair, with a glass at his elbow and his legs crossed, smiling.
Erlend had come up from the station in his oilskin, with the rain still on it, and he stood at the foot of the table.
He looked at me when I came in, and then at the old woman on my arm.
"Danika," he said. "Your father has brought something."
"I know," I said.
"He says it's yours to read."
"It's Hallgerd's," I said. "She wrote it."
Hallgerd let go of my arm.
She walked the length of the room, small and bent in her brown shawl, and every man at the table watched her come.
