Chapter 6: The Video

Eleven days later, Lanting Hall had a banner across its front doors and a ticket line down the pavement.

Mingzhou stood across the street and looked at it.

NIGHT SUITE. Composed and performed by Fang Jinyan.

Somebody had changed the poster overnight.

For a month it had said arranged by.

His skin felt tight and hot.

More than a week had passed since the sofa.

He felt it every morning now.

His body remembered every day even when he tried not to.

He crossed the road and went in through the stage door.

The code still worked.

The hall was half lit.

Two stagehands were carrying flowers down the aisle, and they bowed their heads at him, because everyone knew whose husband he was.

Fang was in the green room, alone.

He looked up from a bowl of noodles and smiled as if nothing in the world was wrong.

"Mingzhou. You look flushed. Are you ill?"

"Why does the poster say composed?"

"Ah." Fang put his chopsticks down. "That."

"You told me you would never."

"I told you a lot of things in the heat of that night." Fang spread his hands. "The label wanted one name. Two names confuse the audience. You know how they are."

"It's my name."

"It's Ye's name." Fang's voice stayed gentle. "And Ye is nobody. Ye is an account with three albums and no face. Do you know what a composer with no face is worth to a concert hall? Nothing."

"You said you'd tell them."

"I changed my mind."

Mingzhou's throat closed.

For a month he had tried to feel what this man had done to him as betrayal, and it hadn't fit. It had felt like a mistake. Something fixable.

Now the floor was gone.

"Take the credit off the poster," he said.

"No."

"I'll go to the label myself."

"And say what?" Fang stood and walked to the door. He closed it softly and turned the lock. "That you are Ye? Prove it. You have no signed manuscripts and you have no studio. Your files are on a cloud account I helped you set up, and I know the password."
