Chapter 23: Everything I Carry
I found him in the family wing, in the suite where we had eaten pizza on the floor.
The door was unlocked.
He was sitting on the carpet with his back against the bed, in the same black suit, with a cold mug beside him.
He did not seem to have slept in days.
On the little table by the window lay a yellow legal pad.
Someone had drawn a dog on the top sheet, in bad ballpoint, and then crossed it out.
He looked up and got to his feet slowly.
"I'm not here to be comforted," I said.
"I know."
"Sit down. You'll want to."
He sat on the edge of the bed.
I stayed standing by the door with the letter in my fist.
"I read it," I said. "The seventh."
His face went still.
"I wasn't going to send it. My mother must have taken it."
"She did."
"I'm sorry."
"No. You don't get to be sorry yet. Listen."
He nodded.
"On Monday morning you stood in a hall and took away my son's surgery with a sentence."
