Chapter 24: May Ninth
On the ninth of May I baked the cake at three in the morning.
It was white, with lemon in it, and six rings of piped frosting that went crooked at the edges.
Bev packed it in a tin and held it on her knees all the way to the cemetery.

The wind came off the river.
Bev set the tin on the grass and walked away to give me the hill.
