Chapter 24: Nobody Writes It Down
On Sunday I hosted my first dinner, in a one-bedroom over a bakery, at a table Bridget had found on the curb.
It seated six if two of us shared a chair.
Toby had taken over the stove at four o'clock.
He wore Bridget's cat apron and sweated into a pot.
"It's chicken and corn," he said, when I peeked. "Corn chowder. I made it from scratch. No shellfish, not even in the stock."
"Toby."
"I know. I'm sorry. I know what the word does to you. But I want to be the Nordin who makes you soup and doesn't have to ask whether you'll eat it."
I took the spoon from his hand and tasted it.
My lips didn't tingle.
It was sweet and salty and a little burned at the bottom.
"It's perfect," I said.
"It's burned."
"It's perfect and burned."
He grinned from ear to ear.
The cook and her daughter came at six.
The cook carried a cake box and wore the best dress again, and the daughter, who was nineteen and had a biology textbook under her arm, said, "I'm only staying till I figure out cell division."
"You're staying till dessert," the cook said.
It was the first time I had seen her laugh.
Ethan arrived last, in jeans and a gray sweater, with a toothbrush in his jacket pocket.
He put it in my hand at the door without a word.
I looked at it.
"Is this a question?"
"It's a toothbrush," he said. "It's whatever you want it to be."
I put it in the cup in the bathroom, next to mine.
When I came back out, everyone was sitting.
Bridget had the head of the table, because she'd brought the wine and also the table.
