Chapter 18: Notice

On Friday I put my notice on the HR director's desk.

It was one page, typed, and it said I would work through the end of the year.

She read it standing up.

"I told him you'd say no to the promotion," she said. "I didn't think you'd leave."

"I'm not leaving because of Kelsey."

"Then why?"

I had practiced the answer in the shower.

"Because for three years I wanted to work somewhere else on the weekends, and a man told me I couldn't," I said. "Now nobody can. I'd like to find out what I do with that."

She looked at the page for a long moment.

Then she signed it, and she put out her hand.

"Lindqvist will give you a reference to wrap around the building," she said.

At my desk, Hank pretended not to be listening.

He had his glasses off, and he was cleaning them on his tie.

"You'll get a card from the whole floor," he said. "They've been passing it around since yesterday. Nobody can agree what to write."

"What did you write?"

"That you're the best adjuster I ever sat beside." He put the glasses back on. "My wife says I'm also supposed to say come to dinner."

"When?"

"Tonight. She's making the pot roast. She's been cooking since six this morning, and she told me not to take no."

I went to the bakery first.

The owner was behind the counter in her flour-stiff apron, ringing up a man with two dozen rolls.

She waved me to the back without a word.

We sat on the flour sacks where Floyd and I had eaten the cinnamon rolls that landed face up.
