Chapter 8: Her Name on It

I read the statement standing up in my underwear, with my hair in my eyes.

Lowell Savings. Account holder: Brinley L. Pembroke.

Balance: $52,310.44.

I read it again, and the number did not change.

I carried it into the bedroom, where Floyd was sitting up against the headboard with the sheet at his waist.

He was awake and had been watching the door.

"What is this?" I said.

"It's yours."

"Floyd. What is this?"

"It's what I meant." He swallowed. "When I said I'd provide. It's every job I did at night, all three years. Every cent went in there, and I never touched it."

"You never told me."

"I wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted to put a number in front of you that you'd never have to worry about."

"I had eleven dollars!"

My voice cracked on it.

"I know," he said. "I know. I looked at that account every night and I thought, one more book. One more month. I wanted it to be enough before I told you."

"Enough for what?"

He looked down at the sheet.

"To ask you something," he said quietly.

I did not want to know what.

I didn't believe a word of it, and I wanted to, so badly that it scared me.

"Get dressed," I said. "I'm going to the bank."

"I'll come."

"No. You'll stay here, and you'll let me check it myself."
