Chapter 22: Wait for Me

Mallory's POV

They let him out of the hospital after nine days, with a sling and a list of rules.

Mace broke most of them by the first evening.

I carried the tin up the loft stairs and set it on the shelf by the window.

He sat on the edge of the bed with the envelope in his good hand.

He had not opened it in nine days.

"You don't have to read it with me here," I said.

"I want you here."

He slid his thumb under the flap and unfolded one page.

He read it silently, and then he held it out to me.

My mother's handwriting was neat and slanted, the same as on the grocery lists.

You were a boy and you did what a boy does. You have been a man ever since. Look after my girl by letting her look after you. She is stubborn, and she will try to send you away. Don't go.

I read it twice.

"She knew you'd be too proud to ask," I said.

"She knew everything."

"Are you going to go?"

"No."

"Good," I said. "Because I'm not sending you away."

He looked up at me, and his eyes were wet.

"Say it again," I said. "What you said in the shower. You told me to wait until I could answer."

"I love you, Mallory."

"I love you."

He closed his eyes.

I took the letter out of his hand and set it in the tin, and then I took the sling off his arm.

"Doctor said keep it on."

"Doctor's not here."

I pushed him gently down onto the bed, and he went, wincing and grinning.
