Chapter 11: Told No
I told him no on Sunday night.
I did it on my mother's porch, in the dark, with the porch light off and the screen door shut behind me.
He had followed my Ford home in his own car, a gray Buick I had never seen him drive.
He had parked two houses down and walked.
He stood at the bottom of the crooked steps with his collar up and his hands at his sides.
"I want to talk to you," he said.
"I know."
"Ximena."
"No," I said.
He stopped.
I had not meant it that way, and then I did.
"No to the room above the laundromat," I said. "No to the key. No to you in the pilothouse at five in the morning, and no to the Westside. You can't have my mother's kitchen and your uncle's table both."
"I haven't asked for both."
"You sat down when he said sit."
His face closed.
"I watched you," I said. "Like a plate. Like you'd been set there."
"You don't understand what it is."
"Then tell me what it is."
He stood in the dark, and I heard his breath, uneven.
