Chapter 7: Yes, Zio
Aurelio's POV
"Where is the car?" my uncle said.
I stood at the laundromat window with the phone against my ear and my trousers still open.
My uncle's voice was gentle, as it always was.
He is seventy-one, and he has not raised his voice to me since I was nineteen years old.
He has never needed to.
"At the yard, Zio," I said. "I took the Buick tonight. I wanted to be alone."
"Alone," my uncle said.
"I wanted to think."
"About?" my uncle said.
"The vending contracts."
There was a pause on the line.
I could hear him breathing, and the small domestic sounds of the house on Gladstone Boulevard, a clock, a spoon on china.
"Cosima says you were not at the bank this morning," he said.
My stomach turned over.
Ximena was looking up at me from the floor.
She had slipped down out of my arms while I talked, and knelt on the boards, naked and flushed, with her braid over one shoulder.
She put both hands on my thighs.
She raised her eyebrows.
I shook my head.
She smiled, slowly, and leaned in, and put her mouth on my stomach.
"Cosima is wrong," I said.
My voice came out steady, and I was almost proud of it.
"The meeting was moved to the side office. She doesn't have the new calendar."
"Ah," my uncle said.
Ximena's lips slid down.
Her hands went around the backs of my thighs.
Her mouth found the soft skin low on my stomach, just above where I was still wet from her, and she kissed it.
Then she opened her mouth and drew a long slow line down with her tongue.
I gripped the window frame.
"You sound strange," my uncle said.
"I ran up the stairs."
"At two in the morning?" he said.
"I'm out of shape, Zio," I said.
He laughed, softly.
It was a dry, kind, terrible sound.
"Come to the house tomorrow," he said. "We will talk about the contracts. Sleep well, nephew."
