Ximena's POV
Cosima came to my mother's house on Saturday at noon in a rented white Corolla.
She parked at the curb and sat in the car for five full minutes with both hands on the wheel, looking at the crooked porch.
I watched her from the kitchen window.
My mother was at the stove with her back to me.
"The woman in that car is going to wear out the steering wheel," she said, without turning.
"That's his sister, Mamá."
"Hm."
She turned down the flame under the beans.
"Go out to her," my mother said. "I'll stay in here. I don't like her coat."
I went out and sat on the top step.
After a minute Cosima got out, shut the car door softly, and came up the walk.
She did not sit.
She stood at the bottom of the steps in her charcoal blazer, looking at the yard, at the dead tomato plants in a coffee can, at anything but me.
"I have something late to say," she said.
"All right," I said.
"I can say half of it. I'll say the half I can."
"Why half?" I asked.
Cosima looked at the dead plants. "Because the other half would get you killed, and it would get me killed first."
