Chapter 14: The North Roof

"You know," Corvin repeated. He sounded delighted. "Since when?"

"Since the Gull," said Bram. "Since I saw her wrist."

He didn't look at Corvin. He kept his eyes on me.

"I watched the Hartwell tape fifty times," he said. "A small hand and a thumb against the wrist. Then a waitress put a beer in front of me and did it."

My mouth had gone dry. "You knew, and you sat at my table."

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to be sure. And then because I couldn't stay away."

He drew a breath, and I saw what it cost him.

"I was on the north roof of the Hartwell that night, Calla."

The warehouse floor went very quiet.

"I'd gone up with a rifle because Dermot told me the week before that Stalworth's people had been to see him. I wanted to be where nobody could look down on him.

"I was too slow. I heard the shot from the service roof, and Dermot was already falling.

"I saw a small figure on the fire escape. I saw her run for the dock.

"I fired once."

My back, which had been burning, went cold.

I felt the place between my shoulder blades where the bullet had gone in.

"You shot me," I said.

"Yes."

"You were the one on the roof."

"I watched you go into the water," said Bram. "I stood there and I thought, *good.* I thought it for weeks.

"Then a stranger with your hands came into a bar and I couldn't think anything at all."

I could not speak.

For three weeks I had wondered who in the dark had wanted me dead. It was the man who had held my wrist and asked who taught me to tap it.

It was the man I had taken into my body the night he gave me a key.

"Oh, this is better," said Corvin softly. "This is much better than I planned."
