Chapter 21: Emmett's Call

Emmett's POV

My hand was inside the canvas jacket, and my fingers were on the gun.

I had carried that gun for twelve years. I had never once pointed it at Corvin Stalworth.

Corvin had the muzzle in Calla's ribs, eight feet from me, and he was smiling at me.

"You have until I count three, Emmett," he said. "One."

Pain pulled at the stitches in my chest with every breath. I ignored it.

I looked at the balcony.

Bram Wainwright stood up there with both hands gripping the rail, and he had not moved, because she had asked him not to.

I thought: *He's a better man than I am. He's doing what she told him.*

"Two," said Corvin.

I thought about the cabin north of the state line.

I had bought it three years ago, with the first money I put aside. I had built the whole plan around a woman in a back room above the office who would never see it.

I had told myself I was waiting for the right day.

I had told myself that for three years.

I looked at Calla, and she was looking at me.

Her face was perfectly calm.

Her left hand hung at her side, and she tapped her thumb twice against the inside of her wrist.

I knew that tap.

For nine years I had watched her do it on a roof, in a car, in a doorway, and every time it meant the same thing.

*Now.*

I did not point the gun at the balcony.

I did not point it at Corvin, because she'd said no killing.

I took my hand out of my jacket, empty, and held it up.

"No," I said.

"What?" said Corvin.
