Chapter 21: What He Owed
The ramp played in silence for a moment.
Then a woman with a black duffel on her shoulder walked into the frame.
She wore a camel coat, and the room knew her before I said a word.
"That's me," I said into the microphone. "That's me leaving my husband."
A black sedan came down the ramp and stopped beside her.
Roland got out.
On the screen, you could see him shouting.
You could see me shouting back.
Two hundred and fifty people watched him seize my arm.
Then a hooded man came down the concrete from the left, fast, with a gun in his hand.
Somebody at the back cried out.
On the screen, Roland looked at the gunman.
He looked at me.
He spun me around by the shoulders and set his palm between my shoulder blades.
He shoved me with his whole weight.
I went off my feet, into the man's path.
The ballroom gasped, one great sound.
The flash on the screen was small and white.
Roland ran.
He got into the sedan, and the sedan reversed up the ramp and out of the frame.
The image held on an empty ramp, and on a woman lying on the concrete in a camel coat.
The numbers in the corner kept counting.
The room was perfectly still.
"That is the man who told you I was fragile," I said. "He told his investor I was ill. He told the police I was alone. He sent me home with pills to help me forget."
I looked at the center table.
"Roland," I said. "You asked me every Sunday if I remembered that day."
