Chapter 22: Her Father's Pastry Box
Sullivan's POV
Carina's father showed up at my door on Saturday at eight in the morning, in a pressed jacket, carrying a pastry box.
He was a short, thick-shouldered man with flour in the creases of his knuckles that no soap had ever fully removed.
I had eaten at his table for twelve years.
I had never once been afraid of him until that moment.
"Mr. Ferrante."
"Sullivan." He looked past me at the empty front room. "You have a chair now."
"Two. She told me to buy two."
"Good."
He came in and sat on the second one with the box on his knees, and I sat on the first.
He did not open the box.
"My daughter doesn't know I'm here," he said. "I told her I was visiting a friend."
"I won't tell her anything."
"I know. You were always a man who kept his word. That's why I'm so angry."
I waited.
"I raised a son who decided his sister's life for her," he said.
"He sat at my table and lied to you for seven Christmases, and I never noticed."
He looked at me.
"Do you know how that feels, Sullivan?"
"No, sir."
"It feels like I did it. I know I didn't. It still does."
"Mr. Ferrante, I..."
"Let me finish."
I closed my mouth.
"I have put Nico on the counter," he said. "Five a.m. to noon, six days a week, and he does not touch the ovens or the books. He takes what I give him. He hasn't complained once."
"Sir, that's yours to do."
"I'm telling you so you know it was done. I'm not asking for mercy for him. I'm not here for that."
