Chapter 5: Red Light
On Thursday he asked if he could pick Rosetta up from school, and I said yes, and then I said I was coming too.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," Sullivan said.
So at ten to three I sat in the passenger seat of his truck, and he drove the way he always drove, with both hands on the wheel and his eyes never still.
I hadn't been in a car with him in seven years.
The cab smelled like coffee and cold metal, and the same cracked leather cuff he'd worn since boot camp hung off the mirror.
I didn't say anything about it.
"She's going to ask why you're in the front," Sullivan said.
"She'll ask why you're in the front."
"Fair."
We pulled into the line of cars outside the school, and Rosetta came out the side door with her backpack bumping her knees.
She saw the truck and broke into a run.
"Mom! You came! And you!"
Sullivan got out and opened the back door for her before I could say anything.
He didn't know how to buckle a booster seat.
She showed him.
She took the belt in both fists and said, "Pull it till it clicks, and then pull it again to make sure," in a patient voice.
He pulled it twice.
She patted his arm.
"You're pretty good at it."
"I have a good teacher."
I looked out the window so neither of them would see my face.
We were two blocks from the school when it happened.
We were stopped at a red light on a wide street, and in the next lane a delivery truck hit a pothole, and something heavy dropped off its flatbed and hit the pavement with a loud crack.
