Chapter 6: Half the Time
The next evening I found him in the cereal aisle of the grocery store with a basket and a list in his own handwriting.
I almost turned my cart around.
He saw me first.
"I was going to ask you what she eats," Sullivan said. "I wrote down what she told me. Biscuits. A tooth sandwich."
"Tooth sandwich?"
"I think she meant a sandwich cut in a tooth shape."
"She means a sandwich with the crusts off, in triangles."
He wrote it down.
"I came here to stand in a place that smells like her house," he said. "I didn't mean to run into you."
"You followed me."
"I was in the parking lot when you pulled in. I waited ten minutes before I came in so it wouldn't look like I followed you."
"That is exactly what it looks like."
"I know."
The store was nearly empty, and an old man at the end of the aisle was squinting at a box of oatmeal.
I lowered my voice.
"What do you want, Sullivan? Say it plainly. I'm tired of you apologizing and not asking."
"Half the time," he said.
I stared at him.
"Not all at once. Not tomorrow. When she's ready, and when you are. But half. Half her weeks, half her holidays, her name on my insurance and mine on her birth certificate."
"No."
"Carina."
"You've known she exists for six weeks," I said. "I've known for seven years. You want half?"
"I know how it sounds."
"You don't. You couldn't. She has a doctor she likes and a dentist she hates and a bedtime song, and none of those people have heard of you."
