Chapter 5: Cut Off

The lawyer's office was above a dry cleaner in Brooklyn, and she kept a bowl of orange slices on her desk for her clients.

A woman from Max's therapy group had given me her number.

"She's mean," the woman had said. "In the good way."

I sat down with Max's headphones in my lap, and I played her the video.

She watched all four minutes with no expression at all.

When it ended she turned her chair toward the window for a moment and then back.

"Mrs. Reed, I'm going to say three things and I want you to write them down."

I took out my notebook.

"One. You do not move out of that apartment. If you leave it, he'll say you abandoned your son."

"Okay."

"Two. This recording is very good for custody, and it is no use at all for the money. New York doesn't care who cheated. It cares who can show what the marriage owned."

"Okay."

"Three." She tapped the table. "You said you've signed a trust page every quarter for six years and you've never seen the deed that created it. Get the deed. Whatever he is rushing you to sign matters more than what he did in that office."

"How do I get it?"

"You can't walk into his legal department and ask. You'll want somebody who was around when the trust was made."
