Chapter 28: The Gate
Jameson looked at me.
I looked back at him.
"Mother," he said into the phone. "Is she hurting anyone?"
"She's crying on your gate. Three of your neighbours are on their porches."
"Don't open it. Don't let her in your car. Tell her I'll be there tomorrow at seven in the evening, at the gate, and she can say whatever she needs to say to me there."
"Sober," he added. "Tell her sober."
There was a pause on the line.
"At the gate," his mother repeated. "In front of the street."
"In front of the street," he said. "That's where she likes to do things."
We drove back to Charleston the next morning in Ollie's truck.
Ollie said he wasn't missing this for anything, and that his husband would never forgive him if he did.
At a quarter to seven, Ollie took him up to the submarine room in the carriage house with a bag of popcorn.
He turned the volcano cartoon all the way up.
"Whatever you hear," he told Benji, "it's the volcano."
"Volcanoes don't talk," said Benji.
"This one does. It's very rude."
The evening was hot and gold. Tradd Street smelled like jasmine and somebody's grill.
