Chapter 31: Four
Jameson looked at me across the kitchen.
He didn't answer Benji.
He was waiting for me, the way he'd waited on the steps.
"Your mom gets to decide that," he said. "Not me."
Benji turned his whole sticky face toward me.
His grandmother put her coffee cup down without a sound.
"Yes," I said. "He can be your dad on paper."
Benji nodded and went back to his pancake.
"Good," he said. "Can I have more syrup?"
"No," said three grown-ups at once.
It took until December.
The family court was in a brick building on the other side of Broad Street.
The hearing was on December twenty-second, at ten in the morning. Benji's birthday.
That wasn't luck. Jameson's mother had called somebody who knew somebody, and then sent them a pound cake.
The judge was a big man with a white beard and a bow tie with holly on it.
Then he looked over his glasses at the small boy sitting between us in a clip-on tie and a dinosaur sweater.
"Young man," he said. "Do you know why you're here?"
"Actually, yes," Benji said. "To make the clone my dad on paper."
