"I'm not asking you to fix anything," Jameson said. "I'm not asking because of Benji, or the house, or the paper."
"I'm asking because I'd like to be your husband. The kind who asks."
"So I'm asking. Will you marry me?"
The lamp hummed. Somewhere upstairs, Benji turned over and said something about plates.
I looked at the ring.
I'd pawned it with a baby on my hip and a coupon book in my bag.
He'd driven to Murfreesboro for it.
"Yes," I said.
He closed his eyes, smiling.
"On one condition."
"Name it."
"Christmas Eve," I said. "The chapel on Broad Street. Small."
He looked up at me from the floor.
"That's in two days."
"You waited four years and three pawnshops. You can do two days."
He slid the ring onto my finger.
It still went on crooked. It always had.
Then he stood up, and I kissed him first, again, by my grandmother's piano.
Christmas Eve was cold and bright, with a hard blue sky over the harbor.
The chapel on Broad Street was small and white inside, with eight pews and a little upright piano by the altar rail.
