Chapter 6: Goodwill
At half past noon I went down to the bakery under my window and bought four pastries for the man upstairs.
The woman behind the counter had flour on her forearms and a gold tooth.
"Is it a celebration?" she asked.
"It's a house rule."
She put an extra almond croissant in the bag and wouldn't take money for it.
I was standing on the pavement with the bag when my phone rang from a number in Arizona.
I almost didn't answer.
I answered because it was past noon, and nobody makes a good decision about an ex on an empty stomach, and mine was no longer empty.
"Corinne," a woman said.
Her voice was low and warm and unhurried.
"This is Piper's mother. I hope I'm not interrupting you. I know it's early for you."
"It's the afternoon."
"Of course. Silly of me." She laughed softly. "I wanted to say first how sorry I am. This has been terrible for everyone, and I know my daughter's situation has asked a great deal of you."
I stepped into the doorway of a closed shoe shop.
"Thank you," I said.
"Dylan has been a wonderful friend to her. He's very loyal. Perhaps too much so, sometimes."
"He took six thousand two hundred dollars from our joint account."
"Yes," she said. "That's why I'm calling."
I waited.
"I'd like to make it right. Today, if you'll allow me. The Landry family has a fund for these things, and I can have that amount in your account within the hour."
My breath fogged in the cold air.
It was almost too easy.
