Chapter 5: The Wire

The bank manager had a glass office with a view of the lobby, and Mr. Kell was waiting in it.

He stood up when I came in.

He had not slept either.

"Annie," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"The manager called me."

"I asked him to."

The manager shifted in his chair.

"Miss Sorley, the Kell loan is four point two million dollars. The guarantee your father signed was the condition for renewing it this winter. Without it, we have to review the whole facility."

"You mean you call the loan."

"I mean we review it. In thirty days."

"Thirty days," I said. "That's a popular number this week."

Mr. Kell took a folded paper from his jacket.

"Annie, you own the north pasture now. That land is worth three times the loan. If you sign a new guarantee in your own name, all of this goes away."

"All of it?"

"The wedding. The brunch. The things said." He swallowed. "Constance will apologize."

"To me."

"To you."

"For what?"

He stopped.

"Mr. Kell," I said. "Your wife handed my groom's girlfriend the key to my bedroom. Which part is she going to apologize for?"

The manager looked at his blotter.

Mr. Kell put the paper down on the desk.

"I'm asking you," he said. "As a man who watched you grow up. Please."

I looked at his hands.

They were shaking a little.

For a second I felt sorry for him, and I let myself feel it.

Then I picked up the paper and read the first line.

It was a guarantee for four point two million dollars with my name typed at the bottom.
