Chapter 11: His Son

Hallie's POV

I took pictures of everything before I let him touch the box.

The test report, the envelope with Brock's writing, every one of the thirty-one letters laid flat on the hall floor.

I sent them all to Dot's phone and to my own email.

"Smart," Gage said.

"I've been lied to by men with signatures," I said. "I keep copies now."

He stood against the lockers with his hands hanging.

I knew he wanted to touch me and didn't dare.

I put the letters back in the shoebox in order and tied the twine.

Then I sat down on the floor of that cold hall and held the box in my lap.

"Can I ask you something?" I said.

"Anything."

"When Brock told you I'd gone to Oregon, why did you believe him?"

Gage didn't answer right away.

"Because I'd have gone," he said. "If I were you."

"What?"

"You were twenty-one, with nobody, and a man in prison who'd had one night with you and then vanished. If you'd left town I'd have understood."

"I wasn't leaving town. I was pregnant."

"I didn't know that."

"Brock did."

His jaw tightened.

"Brock knew I was carrying your kid the day I told him in this building," I said. "He pulled me into his arms, and he said I was his, and he knew."

"Yes."

"And you told him to look after me."

"I did."

"You asked the wrong man."

"I know."

"Do you?" I stood up, and the box shook in my hands. "You gave me to him, Gage. I don't mean you meant to. I mean you put me in a room with the one man who could use it, and walked out the door."
