Chapter 16: The Patch on the Table

Gage's POV

The patch weighed almost nothing.

It was cloth and thread, and it said PRESIDENT in an arc over my left breast.

I had worn it for nine years.

I took my cut off the hook in the back hall on Friday evening and looked at it for a long time.

The old brother with the gray ponytail stood in the door with his arms folded.

"You sure?" he said.

"No."

"Hallie's plan is a good plan."

"It's her plan, and it's mine, and it costs me this."

"It costs you the seat for a day."

"It costs me whatever Brock does with a day."

He didn't argue.

Only he and two others knew what I was about to do, and I had asked them to keep their faces straight when the room saw it.

I walked into the long room at eight.

Twenty-two men sat along the table.

Brock was at the far end, still in the PROSPECT patch from church, with his four men beside him and his lawyer behind.

He sat with his chin up and his hands flat, sure of himself again.

"Brothers," I said.

The room quieted.

"This morning I gave a swab at the county lab. Monday a judge gets the result. Most of you have heard what it's for."

A low sound went around.

"You know what he did. I'm not here to count it. I'm here to tell you what I'm paying."

Brock opened his mouth.

"I'm not done."

He closed it.

"Whatever the test says, I'm a man who took a plea, and walked out of prison, and walked into a custody fight. That fight puts the club in a courtroom. A club can't be run from a courtroom."

I took off my cut.

I laid it flat on the table.

Then I picked up my knife and cut the stitches on the president's patch, one at a time, while twenty-two men watched.
