Chapter 11: What He Said No To
Constance fanned the photographs across the hood of her own car, under the porch light, one at a time.
The first showed me and Dominic outside the Front Street hotel.
I had my hand on his jacket.
The second showed us in the lobby, and the third showed the elevator doors closing.
The fourth was from this morning, and I was standing in the front window of Haldane & Daughter, locking the door behind him.
"A man I trust has followed my son for a week," Constance said. "He was supposed to follow only Preston."
"You had your own son followed."
"I have had everyone followed, dear. It's how you keep a family."
She said it in a voice you would use to hand someone a cup of tea.
I looked at the pictures.
I felt an odd, clean calm.
"What do you want?"
"Nothing you have not already agreed to," she said. "You will marry Preston in three weeks. These will go in a drawer. Your father's note will go in a different one."
"And if I don't?"
"Then these go to the church, and the newspaper, and to your father. In that order."
"You'd shame your own son."
"Dominic has been shamed by experts. He will survive it."
"Preston will see them."
"Preston will see what he is told."
The porch light buzzed.
Somewhere behind the door, a chair scraped and a man's voice shouted her name.
"I could play you something," I said.
"Could you?"
"You remember the clip from the shower. The rest of the recording is six minutes long."
