Chapter 16: Dominic's POV: The Ticket

Dominic's POV

The stonecutters set my father's headstone at ten on Friday morning.

They did it quickly and well, and when they left, the granite stood level in the wet grass with his name on it.

His name, and the dates, and under them the words he used to say at the end of every phone call.

Home by dark.

I had written those words on the order form six years too late.

I sat down on the ground in front of the stone with my back against the next grave.

My phone rang at eleven.

It said Mother.

I let it ring four times, and then I answered.

"Dominic," she said. "You have been busy."

"Hello, Mother."

"You took papers from my safe."

"I took my father's papers from my father's safe."

"Let's not be tiresome." Her voice was calm. "The photographs go out at noon. The church secretary, the newspaper, and Raymond Haldane's cardiologist's office, because I'm told he likes to read his mail there."

"You wouldn't."

"I have already printed them."

I closed my eyes.

I could see my mother at her desk with a letter opener.

"What do you want?"

"I want you on a plane," she said. "Lisbon, tonight. If you are gone, the photographs are pointless. Nobody gossips about a man who isn't here. Margot goes to the altar as planned. Raymond keeps his heart, and you go back to your boats."

"And if I stay?"

"Then a sick man reads a newspaper tomorrow."

She hung up.

I sat in the wet grass with the phone in my hand.

The worst of it was that I could feel the shape of her offer, and that it was a good one.
