Chapter 11: The Informant

Nobody stopped Clint from leaving.

I watched Dread's jaw work as my husband walked back out through the big doors.

He crossed the gravel to his cruiser without hurrying.

"Let him go," Dread said to the men who had started forward. "He has two units at the county line. If he doesn't come out, they come in."

The cruiser's headlights came on again and swung away.

Then the whole room turned, slowly, to my brother.

"Church," Dread said. "Now."

The back room of the mill held one long table made of old barn doors.

Twelve men sat at it in silence.

I was not supposed to be inside. Dread let me in anyway, and nobody argued.

Alec stood at the head of the table with his hands open and his vest still on.

I stood by the wall with my arms wrapped around myself.

"Say it," Dread said. "All of it. Don't leave out the ugly parts."

My brother took a breath.

"Two years ago I got pulled over on the Dayton road. Clint had followed me from the garage. There was a bag in my glove box."

"Was it yours?" the heavy man asked.

"No."

"Whose was it?"

"His." Alec's voice cracked. "I know that now. I didn't then. I was twenty-three, and I'd never been arrested, and I sat in the back of his cruiser and he told me what a felony does to a man's life."

"What did he want?" Dread said.

"He said I could make it go away. I tell him what the club's doing, and he forgets the bag."

I made a sound. Alec didn't look at me.

"I said no. Three times. Then he told me what he could do to Betsy."

My hands went to my mouth.

"He said a deputy's wife is the easiest person in the county to ruin. He said he could take her license, take her house and put her in a cell for a drug case, and she'd never find out who started it." Alec wiped his face with the back of his wrist.
