Chapter 18: Cell Block

On Monday morning Clint walked me down the cell block himself.

I had come to the county jail with Lo and a lawyer from Dayton.

Lo carried a paper bag of biscuits that no one was going to let in.

The lawyer was told to wait in the lobby. Lo was told to wait with him.

"Mrs. Holzer can visit," the desk deputy said. "Family of the arresting officer. Deputy Holzer will escort."

Clint held the steel door for me with a courteous little bow.

The corridor smelled of bleach and old coffee.

The young deputy with the sunburned neck stood by the far wall with his thumbs in his belt.

Two other men leaned on the bars of an empty cell, watching us come.

"I thought you should see where he is," Clint said. "It's only fair."

He stopped at the fourth door on the left.

"You never got to see where the other one was."

It was a small cell. A bunk, a steel toilet, a drain in the floor.

Someone had scratched initials into the paint over the bunk and tried to scrub them away.

"We keep this one empty now," Clint said. "Bad luck."

I did not say anything. I could not.

Wade had been twenty-nine years old and engaged, with a wedding set for spring.

Dread sat in the next cell, on the edge of a bunk, in his undershirt, with his boots off and his hands hanging between his knees.

He looked up.

There was a bruise along his jaw that had not been there on the road.

"You shouldn't be here," he said.

"I wanted to see you."

"You've seen me."

"Enough," Clint said. "Here's what's going to happen."

He turned to face me with his back to the bars, so that Dread and the deputies could all hear.

"This is a felon-in-possession case. It's a federal case if I want it to be, and he'll do ten years."

Clint lifted a hand.

"Or I lose the paperwork. A bad stop, a clerical error. It happens every week."

"What do you want?" I asked.

"You come home tonight. You walk out of here with me."

I heard Dread draw a breath.

"You sleep in your bed, and you tell your friends it was a misunderstanding. You send the brother back to Dayton. And the McFadden man is out by dinner."

"Betsy," Dread said.

I looked at him through the bars.

He didn't say go.

He didn't say stay.
