Chapter 21: The Back Door

Brogan's POV

Alec sat on the garage floor under the bay lights with his back against a tire rack.

He had not run. He had not hidden.

He had walked to my shop at midnight with a man at his back, and now he waited for me.

I sent the man with the white beard to the corner of the lot and shut the side door.

Then I stood over the boy who had ridden with my brother.

"Talk."

"I haven't told you all of it."

"I know. You lied to your sister for three years, and you lied to this club."

"I'm not lying now."

His hands were between his knees, and they were shaking.

"The night Wade was arrested," he said. "The night he died. I was there."

Nothing in me moved.

That is how it goes when it comes. The room gets very clear.

"There where?"

"The county jail. In the back hall."

He swallowed.

"I was twenty-two. I heard at the garage that they'd taken him in, and I drove over with a clean shirt and a phone charger."

"They didn't let you in."

"The front desk wouldn't take them. I was standing in the lot, trying to decide what to do, and Clint came out the side door."

"He was your sister's husband by then?"

"For two months. He was in a good mood, and he put his arm around me."

Alec's voice cracked.

"He said family looks after family. He said he could get me ten minutes with Wade, off the log, if I did him a small favor."

I did not breathe.

"What favor?"

"There's a back hall behind the cells. A steel door with a card reader."

"He gave me his card and told me to hold the door open from the inside while he moved a prisoner."
