He Cheated With My Cousin, So I Totaled a Biker President's Harley novel · Chapter 8 of 32

Chapter 8: Wade

I did not sleep, so at five in the morning I went downstairs to start the coffee.

Dread was already sitting in the dark dining room, in the corner booth under his brother's photograph.

He had not slept either.

I put two mugs on the table and sat across from him.

"I laughed," I said.

He looked up.

"Two summers ago. Clint told it at our barbecue, a biker in his cell who hanged himself, and he passed around the mug shot on his phone. Your brother's face."

My voice shook.

"People laughed. I laughed with them. I handed down the potato salad."

Dread said nothing.

"I didn't know it was him. I didn't know any of it. But I want you to know that I sat there and laughed, because if I don't say it, you'll find it out later and think I hid it."

For a long time the only sound was the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

"Why tell me?" he said.

"Because on Friday you took my phone before I said a word."

"I did."

"You decided I was lying, and you decided it in a second."

"I decided you were Holzer's." He turned the mug a quarter turn on the table. "I knew who you were the moment I saw the registration. I didn't see a woman in a wreck. I saw his name."

"And now?"

"Now I know you laughed at the table, and you came down here at five in the morning to tell me."

He lifted his eyes.

They were very grey, and for once he did not hide anything behind them.

"I knew who you were," he said. "I still gave you a rag for your head."

"You did."

"I put my hand on his hood when he leaned toward you. A man doesn't do that for a woman he thinks is a plant."
