Chapter 24: Plain
The next Thanksgiving I cooked for eight, and there wasn't a pepper in the house.
I roasted the turkey with butter and sage, and made potatoes the plain way, and put a bowl of cranberries on the table that tasted of nothing but cranberries.
Nathan stood at my shoulder in the kitchen, tasting the gravy off a wooden spoon.
"It needs salt."
"It does not."
"It needs a little."
He added a pinch and tasted it again, and then he held out the spoon for me.
He was right, and I told him so, and he kissed the side of my head.
His things had been in my closet since June.
Nobody on Queen Anne had said anything about it.
The divorce had gone through in March, without a hearing and without a fight.
Colin sent me a card at Easter, from a clinic in Arizona, with three lines in his careful handwriting.
I kept the card in a drawer.
It was not forgiveness.
It was an acknowledgment, and I had learned the difference.
By two o'clock the house smelled of butter and rolls.
My father arrived first, in a good sweater, carrying a cooler with the cider he had pressed himself.
He took off his shoes at the door.
"You don't have to," I said.
"I do."
He put the cooler in the kitchen and stood there with his big hands hanging, looking at the stove.
"Smells good."
"It's plain."
"I like plain."
He wiped his eyes with the back of his wrist and pretended he hadn't.
