Chapter 12: The Law of Both Families

I did not scream at Livia in the corridor.

I looked at her, and she looked at the floor, and Nico started to cry.

That was all.

By midnight I had made up my mind.

My mother had days, and the only person who could stop it had said she was afraid.

I would walk into the old hall and give Ruggero his paper.

Alessio did not argue with me.

He put the metal box in a bag over his shoulder, kissed the inside of my wrist in front of the nurses, and said, "Do not sign until the notary has spoken."

"Why?"

"Because he knows something I cannot prove yet. Trust me for one hour."

I had not trusted anyone for six years.

I nodded.

The old hall was lit with candles when I reached it, and the benches were full.

Ruggero's men closed the doors behind me.

Alessio stopped on the threshold, and the two men on either side of him put a hand on his arms.

"The bride answers alone, nephew," Ruggero called. "It is the custom."

Alessio looked at me down the length of the hall.

I gave him a small nod, and he stood still.

I walked the aisle between a hundred black coats, and nobody coughed.

At the center table lay the dissolution, with the pen set beside it, and two witness lines waiting.

Livia sat at Ruggero's left.

She was holding Nico's hand in hers, and the boy was fast asleep on the bench.

An old man in a grey suit stood at the table's end with a leather case under his arm.

He was the Families' notary, and I had known him since I was a little girl.
