Chapter 7: Otter Lake

There were two Redfern trucks parked on my mother's lawn at Otter Lake, and a warrior smoking on her porch swing.

I parked behind them and got out with Robin asleep in the sling on my chest.

He was six weeks old and twice the size he'd been at birth.

He had my mother's frown when he slept.

The warrior on the swing flicked his cigarette into her flowerbed.

"Lost, omega?"

"This is my land."

"This is Crale land. Alpha's orders. We're holding the house for the pack."

Three more came out of the front door behind him.

They were eating out of a bag of chips, and one of them was wearing my father's old fishing hat.

I held up the deed.

"Eileen Crale signed this over to me six weeks ago. Read it."

The one in the hat laughed.

"Eileen doesn't run Redfern."

"Then go home and tell Tarran his mother's signature isn't worth the paper. I'm sure she'll love that."

That shut him up for a second.

I walked up the porch steps.

The warrior on the swing stood and put himself in the doorway, chest out.

He was a foot taller than me.

"You're not going in."

"Move."

"Or what? You'll throw a baby at me?"

They all laughed.

Robin stirred against my chest and made a small cross noise.

I put my hand over his back and looked the man in the eye.

"My mother died in that lake," I said. "I'm going to sleep in her bed tonight. Move, or I'll go through you."

He grabbed my arm.

Then he looked past me, down at the road, and let go.

I turned around.

People were walking up the lake road.

The old cook from the pack house was in front, in her apron and her church coat, carrying a crate.

Behind her came both laundry girls, and the gate boy, and the two old omegas who kept the hens, and the widow who sewed the pack's ceremonial robes, and more behind them.
