Chapter 24: Up Front
Cade stood in the middle of the shop with his hands out of his pockets and no vest.
He had lost weight in a week, and he hadn't shaved, and he didn't come closer than the counter.
Rhett came down the stairs first with his jeans on and nothing else, and I came behind him in his flannel shirt.
"I won't be long," Cade said.
"Say it," Rhett said.
"I signed the papers." He took a folded sheet out of his jacket and laid it on the counter. "I'm not contesting. She can have all of it. I went to the county attorney this afternoon and told him the same thing I told the table."
"You told him you drove."
"I told him I drove." His voice cracked on it. "They'll want a plea. I'll take it."
I looked at the paper.
It was signed in blue ink, with his full name, and the date.
"I'm not asking you for anything," Cade said. "I don't get to. I only came to say that I'm sorry, Ruby, and I know you don't want that either."
"I don't," I said.
"Then I'll go."
"Cade."
He stopped at the door.
"When the baby's old enough to ask," I said, "I'll tell them what you did, and I'll tell them what you said tonight. All of it. They'll get both."
He nodded once.
He didn't turn around, and he went out into the dark and the bell rang behind him.
The county gave him four years.
I read it in the paper over eggs, and Rhett read it over my shoulder, and neither of us said anything.
Then it was January, and the snow came in sideways across Route 9.
I woke at three in the morning with a pain that took my breath, and I lay still and counted.
