Chapter 6: The Chitwood Heir

"Come into the office, girl," Floyd said. "Before my son does something he can't take back."

The room had started to move again.

Cade had Tawny by the elbow and was steering her toward the kitchen, talking low and fast, and she was still crying.

I followed the old man down the hallway because I wanted to be away from that room more than I wanted to say no.

His office was a small paneled room behind the bar with a desk, a gun safe, and a framed map of the county on the wall.

The map had dark blue lines drawn around the clubhouse and the lot and eleven acres of pasture behind it.

Floyd lowered himself into the desk chair and laid his cane across his knees.

"Shut the door," he said.

I pushed it until it nearly closed and left a sliver of light.

"How far along?" he asked.

"I don't know what you mean."

"Don't insult me. I raised two sons and buried a wife. How far?"

I looked at the map instead of his face.

"Seven weeks."

"And you haven't told Cade."

"I was going to, on Saturday, at the ride."

"Good thing you didn't." He grunted. "He'd have used it."

"For what?"

"To keep you." He leaned forward. "Do you know what's written on that wall? What's in the charter in my safe?"

"No."

"This land is mine. The clubhouse is on it. The Kings pay me a dollar a year, because forty years ago my daddy's friends and I agreed to it. When I die, the land and the president's seat go to the first Chitwood grandchild born into this club, to hold until they're grown. The child's mother names which Chitwood sits the seat until then."
