Chapter 7: Under Her Nails

Every head in the hall turned to me.

I had a forkful of eggs halfway to my mouth.

I put it down.

Rune was beside Freya in two seconds, his arm around her, her bleeding arm cradled in his hands.

Her friends from the shore crowded in behind them.

"Look at it," Rune said to the room.

His voice shook.

It was very good.

"Look what she did to my mate."

The visiting Alphas were at the long tables with their coffee.

Eleven of them.

They looked at Freya's arm, and then at my bruised knuckles on the tablecloth.

I saw what they saw.

The rejected Luna who'd beaten a man bloody in the yard last night.

"I passed her on the stairs," I said. "I didn't touch her."

"Liar!"

Freya's voice cracked.

Tears spilled down her face.

"You said I'd stolen your life. You said you'd mark me so he'd never look at me again. You grabbed me and you..."

She couldn't finish. She buried her face in Rune's shoulder.

Haakon came down off the raised step.

The hall made way for him.

He stopped in front of his daughter and looked at her arm.

His face didn't change at all.

I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

"Freya," he said quietly. "Is that what happened?"

She lifted her wet face.

"Yes, Papa."

"Then she's done here," Rune said, and turned on Haakon.

"She's packless, she's violent, and she's obsessed with me. She attacked my beta in front of your warriors and now she's clawed your only child. If you let her stay one more night under this roof, every Alpha in this hall will know what Kingsfall thinks its heir is worth."

He let that sit.

The Alphas let it sit too.

Haakon turned and looked at me.

It was the longest second of my life.
