Chapter 19: My Name Is Radcliffe

Nathan walked out of the county jail at nine the next morning with his tie in his pocket and a bond posted in my name.

I met him on the sidewalk.

He looked at me for a long moment, and then he pulled me into his chest and held on.

"Five years," he said into my hair.

"I know."

"I should have come to find you."

"I wouldn't have opened the door."

"I'd have broken it."

I laughed, and my eyes stung.

Across the street a dozen cameras had found us.

"Come on," I said. "We're going to the tower."

The Radcliffe building filled half a block downtown, forty floors of gray glass with the family crest over the doors.

Reporters packed the steps.

My brother straightened his jacket, and Jasper took up the place behind my left shoulder, and I walked up three steps to the lectern someone had hurried out for us.

"My name is Imogen Radcliffe," I said.

The cameras went off in a wall of white.

"I was married to Preston Ames for five years under the name Imogen Ames. I am no longer going by that name."

A reporter shouted a question, and I ignored it.

"My family has told you I'm confused. My husband has told you I'm ill. I am neither. I faked my death because the man I married made me the signer on a blood-diamond purchase and planned to inherit my trust when I was gone."

The shouting stopped.

"My brother helped me because I asked. He is not a criminal. He is a man who answered the phone."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"I am a Radcliffe," I said. "I have been one since the day I was born, and I should never have hidden it. I will not hide it again. My child will carry it."

Behind the crowd a black car slid to the curb.

The rear window lowered half an inch.

I knew those gray eyes.

My father looked at me through the gap, and I looked back, and I did not look away first.

The window rolled up.
