Chapter 28: What He Asked For
Preston's POV
They took my belt, my tie, my shoelaces and my watch.
They gave me a gray sweatshirt that smelled of bleach.
The holding cell had a steel bench, a steel toilet and a light that never went off.
I sat on the bench with my elbows on my knees and looked at the floor for what felt like a day.
It had been eleven hours.
A guard told me so when I asked.
"Your lawyer's here," he said at the bars. "Ten minutes."
My lawyer sat across from me in an interview room with a legal pad he did not write on.
"They have the recordings," he said. "They have the sheets in your handwriting. They have Miss Harcourt on video from the highway, and the confession on air."
"Can we get it thrown out?"
"It was broadcast, Preston."
"I was under duress."
"You were holding her by the arm." He rubbed his eyes. "I can negotiate. Twenty years, maybe fifteen if you give them the Harcourt side."
"Lydia is the Harcourt side."
"Then give them yourself."
He gathered his papers and stood.
At the door he stopped.
"The trust petition is withdrawn," he said. "The board is gone. The house is frozen. I can't take your case if there's nobody to pay me."
"I'll find the money."
"Where?"
He left without waiting for an answer.
I was taken back to the cell.
A small television hung in the corridor outside, and the guards had it on the news.
It showed the cliff road, and me on my knees with my hands out.
Under it ran the line: PRESTON AMES CHARGED, HALCYON FAMILIES GATHER AT COURTHOUSE.
