Chapter 12: The Pad

Melanie's POV

The white SUV pulled into the drive at four that afternoon.

Trudy was at the hardware store buying stovepipe, and I was alone on the porch with a mug of tea, watching the lake turn gray.

Cameron got out of the driver's side and stood by the car with his phone at his ear.

Celia got out of the passenger side by herself.

She had on the camel coat, buttoned over her stomach, and she came up the porch steps slowly with one hand on the rail.

"Hello," she said.

"Hello."

"May I sit?"

I pointed at the bench by the door.

She sat, and she folded her hands in her lap, and her eyes were full.

"I told Cam I wanted to do this alone," she said. "He's on with his lawyer. I think he's afraid I'll say something wrong."

"Will you?"

"I hope not." She tried to laugh. "Melanie, I haven't slept. I keep thinking about the bench, and the folder, and how you looked when you stood up and left. I could have said something that didn't make you feel more alone."

"You gave me a granola bar."

"I should have given you a ride."

I almost smiled at that.

I hated that I almost did.

"Cameron chose me for the baby," she said. "Not for love. I know that and he knows that. I'm sorry I'm the reason you're out here in the cold. I want to make it right."

"How?"

"Let me help you. Let me be there when you deliver."

"No."

"Please," said Celia. "Just think about it. For the baby's sake."
