Chapter 14: Five Weeks of Silence

Cameron came back at six the next morning, alone, in the gray sedan with the dented door.

He stood on the porch with snow in his hair.

"I took her home," he said. "I stayed an hour. I told her I had to see my lawyer."

"Come in."

"Melanie, something is wrong with her. I know it is. I can't say what."

"Sit down," I said. "I'm going to show you."

I put Trudy's phone on the kitchen table between the teapot and the sugar.

Trudy stayed at the stove with her back to us and her arms folded.

I pressed play.

His mouth came open when the strap showed.

Then the voice, small and sweet out of the speaker: "You can't prove it."

He did not move for the whole recording.

When Celia said, "Cameron will believe me. He always has," the phone slid a quarter inch across the table, and I realized his hand had hit it.

The video ended on the boots coming up the gravel.

They were his.

"I walked right past it," he said.

"Yes."

"I knew it wasn't moving. I put my hand on that belly and I knew, and then she fainted and I took her to the Pavilion." He stopped. "I carried her to the car. You were watching me carry her."

"I was."

"You smiled at me."

"I was trying not to be sick."

He put his face in his hands.

It was a long time before he spoke.

"I thought," he said into his palms, "that I owed her the baby. That whatever else I had done wrong, I couldn't be a man who abandoned a pregnant woman. I told myself that was the one decent thing I had left. And she was the one who built the whole trap out of it."

"She picked you because you'd do it."

"She picked me because I'd rather feel guilty than ask a question."
