Chapter 15: The Founders' Gala

The atrium of the Draycott Pavilion had a glass roof, and snow was falling on it in the dark.

Three hundred people stood under it in black and silver with champagne in their hands.

I came through the doors on Trudy's arm.

She wore her good wool suit and her reading glasses on their cord, and she walked like a woman crossing her own kitchen.

I wore the green dress we had let out at the waist on her sewing machine.

Heads turned all the way down the marble.

"Chin up," Trudy murmured. "Let them look. You're the best thing in the room."

"I'm the pregnant one they weren't told about."

"Same thing."

Odette waited at the head of the family table with both hands on her cane.

"Miss Whitacre," she said. "You came."

"You sent an invitation."

"I'm pleased you understand what it means." She looked at my waist and then at Trudy. "And you've brought your landlady."

"I brought my friend," I said. "She drove."

Celia was already at the table.

She wore pale blue silk cut loose over her stomach, and she rose and kissed my cheek.

"I'm so glad," she said into my ear. "I knew you'd see sense."

Cameron stood behind her chair in a black suit.

He looked at me for a moment, then he put his hand on the back of Celia's chair and smiled at the room.

I knew what that smile cost him.

I saw the muscle jump in his jaw.

Earlier that afternoon, while Celia was having her hair done, he had walked into the Pavilion's sound booth with a laminated pass he still hadn't been stripped of, and he had plugged Trudy's phone into the cable that fed the ballroom screen.

The technician had looked at the pass and asked no questions.
