Chapter 9: The Bakery

Melanie's POV

Trudy told me at five in the morning that Cameron had gone.

She said it standing in the hall with the flashlight still in her hand.

"He got a call. He left at two. I'm sorry, honey."

I said that was fine.

I put on my apron and walked to the bakery in the dark.

The baker had decided I was a project.

He'd put a stool behind the counter and written EAT on a sticky note and stuck it to the register.

"Sit," he said. "That's an order."

"I'm fine."

"You look like a ghost with a grudge."

I laughed, which was what he wanted.

At nine, in the lull, I went out the back door and sent Cameron one text, and I did not read it over before I hit send.

You left at two. Don't come back.

Then I turned my phone off and went back to the counter.

I was ringing up the third school bus driver when the little bell over the door rang and the room went quiet.

Odette Draycott walked in with her cane in one hand and a thin man in a gray suit holding a briefcase behind her.

She looked at the pastry case, at the fishermen, at the stool, and at me.

"Miss Whitacre," she said.

"We're serving," said the baker. "What can I get you?"

"Nothing. I am here to speak with this young woman."

"Then you can do it from the line."

Odette smiled thinly.

She turned to face the room, and she raised her voice, though she never needed to.

"Good morning," she said. "I'm sorry to interrupt your breakfast. My name is Odette Draycott. This young woman is carrying my grandson's child, and she has chosen to hide it from him in a house on a lake."
