Chapter 24: Where Dustin Is
"Where are you right now?" I said.
"On the steps. Mom took the car."
"She left you there?"
"She said she couldn't look at anybody." Chelsea hiccuped. "She took the cake."
"Stay on the steps. I'm coming."
Patty was already holding out my keys.
The pavilion lot was empty except for the rental van loading up the balloon arch.
Chelsea was sitting on the bottom step in a white dress with six gift bags around her feet.
Her ankles were swollen over the straps of her sandals.
She'd taken her shoes off. They were lined up beside her.
I got out and picked up the gift bags.
"Get in."
She looked up at me with her mascara gone.
"You're not going to say it?"
"Say what?"
"I told you so."
"I didn't tell you so. I told you he'd leave. That's different."
She almost laughed. It came out as a sob.
I put the bags in the back and helped her up into the truck. It's high. She couldn't do it alone anymore.
"Where do you want to go?"
