Chapter 25: The Two of Us
The box was lighter than I expected.
Twenty-three years, and I could carry it with one arm.
My mother stood in the doorway with her oven mitt still on.
"Drive safe," she said.
She shut the door.
Through the living room window I could see Jenna setting out the pie plates. Eight of them. One for Josh.
I carried the box down our street, past all the parked cars, to the T stop on Washington Road.
On the side, in my mother's round handwriting, it said A.
Back in my room I set it on the bed and cut the tape with my apartment key.
My report cards were on top, in a rubber band that snapped.
My retainer in its pink case.
A birthday card from Grandma with ten dollars still inside.

The hospital folder wasn't there.
The crayon drawing was at the very bottom, flat against the cardboard.
