Chapter 13: My Mother's Rose

Boone woke when I set the revolver on the cot beside his hand.

His fingers closed around the grip before his eyes were open.

"Easy," I said. "It's me."

He let go of it and rubbed his face.

"Where did you find that?"

"Under the cot. And there's a bike track outside, Boone. Somebody rode a circle around us while we were in here."

He pulled on his jeans and followed me to the door.

The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, and the track was still sharp in the soft dirt.

He crouched and laid his hand beside it.

"Narrow tire," he said. "Light bike. A dirt bike, maybe. Not a Harley."

"One of yours?"

"One of the prospects rides one." He looked up at the logging road. "Whoever it was, they watched us come in, and they watched us stay."

I stood over him with my arms crossed.

The sun was on his bare back, and the scratches I had put there last night were red from his shoulders to his belt.

He saw me looking, and he stood.

"Lena. About last night."

"Don't."

"I'm not sorry."

"I know you're not." I kept my voice level. "Terms, Boone. Not even on your best day. That's what I told you in the shed."

"I remember."

"Then say it back to me. I broke it, not you. Say it."

"You broke your own terms," he said slowly, "and you wanted me to know you knew."

"I wanted you to know it changes nothing about the porch." I picked up his shirt and threw it at his chest. "You were in a cemetery believing a stranger about me. I can still want you and not forgive you."

He pulled the shirt on, and he took it.

He did not argue, and he did not touch me again.
