Chapter 19: The Contract
The Hamilton clinic would not cancel the Thursday booking, because only the caller could, and Boone's old number rang out every time we tried it.
Boone said to leave it standing and see who came looking for me.
Birdie's diner had one black wall and six fewer tables, and it was open by Wednesday.
"People still need eggs," she said, flipping her sign to OPEN with a hand that shook once.
I tied on an apron behind the counter and put my phone in the front pocket with the recorder running.
Birdie had suggested it.
"If that girl comes in again," she said, "I want her to say the quiet part out loud."
Joelle came in at eleven.
She wore the white jacket and sunglasses, and she sat alone at the corner table where she had sat the first morning.
The lunch crowd was three truckers and an old couple.
Birdie nodded to me from the grill.
I carried over a coffee pot and two cups and sat down across from Joelle without being asked.
"I didn't order," she said.
"You're not here for the eggs."
She took off her sunglasses.
Her eyes looked tired, and there was a shadow under each one that her makeup had not quite covered.
"Boone threw my suitcase down the steps," she said.
"He's good at that."
"My father says you embarrassed him in front of the line."
"Your father embarrassed himself. I read out a license plate."
She poured her own coffee and didn't drink it.
"What do you want, Lena?"
"I want to know why you did it. You're not a stupid woman. You're a founder's daughter with a whole club behind you, and you climbed on the back of a married man's bike in front of his wife. Why?"
